Joyce Jackson is a child safety expert and co-owner of Keeping Kids Safe. She evolved into an instrumental role in the program when she enrolled her four year old son into a Keeping Kids Safe class. While the stories about Joyce being an architect, owner of a design and consulting firm in the San Francisco Bay area, marathon runner, martial arts Black Belt and Mom are true, she simply views herself as someone like everyone else who has encountered and faced the struggles of everyday life. ![]() Joyce’s personal goal is the same as Keeping Kids Safe, that is, to teach 20 million kids by 2010 to keep themselves safe. She grew up in the western suburbs of Chicago in an all-too-familiar dysfunctional family. Her family lived in a blue collar neighborhood where alcoholism and spousal abuse were the norms of the day. Joyce’s father traveled as a salesman whose philandering ways spilled over to the family. Her mother escaped most of the time into alcoholism and the sinking quicksand of acute mental depression. Joyce found herself throughout childhood alone and distinctly different from other girls her age. Her natural athletic abilities coupled with an inner unspoken drive to “make a difference in this world” constantly drove her into waters that were at the time, “Off Limits To Women.” She would have surely followed in her older sister's footsteps of alcoholism and drug abuse if it were not for a junior high school teacher who took her aside one afternoon after she found herself in the principals' office once again. He said, "You know, you are absolutely brilliant. If you would just stop goofing off and take yourself seriously, you could be anything you want to be. You could even get out of this place.” This was the first time in twelve years anyone said anything positive or encouraging to her. After the shock of the discussion sunk in, Joyce began to slowly realize she could head in a direction different from her family, neighborhood or friends. To this day, she remembers and is thankful for the tremendous impact that one individual, Richard Cerwyn, has made on her life. Without realizing it, this experience is the one event that convinced Joyce that one person can influence and change the world. As Joyce’s life evolved she became ostracized by her family. Over the years, with the help of other key individuals coupled with a tenacious personal mission to improve herself and make a difference in the world, she escaped the destructiveness of her family environment. Joyce is the first to say that if she can escape her circumstances, anyone can! Joyce is no stranger to action as she has spent a prolific twenty-five year career as a licensed and practicing architect. Prior to Keeping Kids Safe, her last 12 years was as a business partner and co-owner of a 17 person design and consulting firm in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her strategic planning and execution skills have help bring Keeping Kids Safe into every home across the globe. Her personal evolution into an instrumental role with Keeping Kids Safe, coupled with a tenacious persistence to keep as many kids as possible safe and secure, has catapulted her into the forefront of child safety with Preston Jones. Her personal skills allow her to bring an uncanny drive and energy to building strong relationships with strategic partners, organize and access groups and cut across the globe to keep as many kids around the world as safe as possible. Her interests still lie in the martial arts, marathoning and fitness as well as personal evolution and development. She is proud to be a partner but more importantly, friend of Preston Jones. She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband Robert and two sons, Zachary and Nathaniel. |
