Memorial Day Weekend Driving Tips

Posted by: Joyce in safety tips, safety, family, driving safety on May 23, 2008

It’s the “official” start of summer! This is Memorial Day weekend! Traditionally American Families hit the Road for a 3 day family vacation. Even with the high gas prices you may head out – even if its closer to home. Here’re our safe driving tips:

Buckle up, slow down, and not drive under the influence, day and night.

Adults and larger kids: use the entire belt system, lap belt across hips, and shoulder belt over collarbone and crossing center of chest.

Keeping your belts free of slack and lying flat with no twists.

Avoiding reclining your seats because the more you recline, the greater the possibility you will slip under and out of the belts in a crash.

Placing children in a child safety seat or booster seat appropriately rated for their size.

As the driver of the vehicle, take on the responsibility to make sure the car is in good working order, tires are inflated properly, and fluids, including windshield washer fluid are filled. You’re in charge, so make sure everyone is buckled in and safe before you pull out of the drive.

When stopping at public fill up stations or rest stops, walk all your children to the restrooms. Go inside with them or stand right outside the door until they come out.

Take extra water for the entire family in the trunk in case you get delayed. Make sure you have a good emergency kit as well.

If you feel tired or drowsy, pull off and rest or change drivers.

These are just common sense but good reminders.

Finally, at noon PDT, 3pm EDT, take one minute to remember the Americans that made this country so great for all of us.
