Net Providers Finally Agree to Block Sites With Child Sex

Posted by: Joyce in internet safety, child safety, child online safety on Jun 12, 2008

A friend of mine sent me a nifty link to the latest from the New York Times on Internet safety.

It seems these very responsible companies, Verizon, Sprint and Time Warner Cable have agreed to block access to Internet bulletin boards and Web sites nationwide that disseminate child pornography.

I mixed with emotion. Joyous and stupefied. “Oh Boy!” is the joy part and, “Gee, It only took 30 years and the threat of a class action suit for these guys to act to stop the proliferation of child pornography on the web!” is the stupidfied part.

They’re all patting each other on the back today, no doubt.

My hat is off to the New York attorney general, Andrew M. Cuomo. He pushed for this as he too, is disgusted with the untethered access to child pornography. Many in the industry have previously resisted similar efforts, saying they could not be responsible for content online, given the decentralized and largely unmonitored nature of the Internet.

Gimme a break! Its children for gosh sakes! Time to act responsibly instead of by the pocketbook and bottom line.

The agreements will affect customers not just in New York but throughout the country. Verizon and Time Warner Cable are two of the nation’s five largest service providers, with roughly 16 million customers between them.

Negotiations are continuing with other service providers. This means they’ll finally come around and comply when they get sued, too. I don’t care. Whatever it takes.

Hats off to Mr. Cuomo.

A BIG thanks to the NY Times for bringing this to our attention.
