The Parenting and Teaching Dilemma

The Parenting and Teaching Dilemma

I read a really entertaining post this morning!

It was called "Parking the suitcase" from Keri Wyatt Kent of Boomer Babes Rock.

She was musing, '"The trick of parenting is figuring out how to communicate two truths that seem contradictory:

1. “You are not the center of the universe; I do not exist simply to take care of you.”

And

2. “You are precious, treasured and important to me; I love spending time with you.”'

I hope she was musing. I am now.

This paradox we wrestle with all the time in our safety programs and classes. There is a balance between building confidence in kids and empowering them to take the responsiblity for keeping themselves safe.

There is a fine line we walk all the time in "Your're Great!" versus "Yes You Can! Do It Yourself!" Then there is the issue of the parents that drop their kids off in the parking lot, drive away before they even enter the building and then return 30 to 45 minutes after class is over....they honk in the parking lot until their child runs out and climbs back in the car. Two, sometimes three lvels deep we parent.

Did I mention we parent the parent, too? Oh! I digress.

In parenting my own two sons, I share Keri's view.

...Hats Off To Keri
